SMS in the Maldives

ITS have been awarded a contract to deliver a 3-day SMS Implementation course for Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT).

MAT has an SMS in place, and are currently entering existing reports into the associated database. All company managers, and a number of additional personnel, have attended both initial and recurrent SMS training courses and so are familiar with SMS in general, and how it specifically relates to their own SMS manual.

However, many SMS courses cover the components mandated by ICAO, but some operators find these to be only vague statements that do not emphasize the practical implementation of these items. For example:

• Safety Policy – Often sample policy statements are not provided and no advice is given on how to develop one.
• Safety Accountability
• Safety Targets and Performance Indicators – There should be discussion about how realistic and meaningful the targets should be…and provision of examples for comparison and to aid learning
• Hazard and Risk Management – There is often a need for practical examples of hazards in the work place and how to mitigate them.

The SMS Implementation course ITS will deliver to MAT covers all of these, and many more, practical issues around the implementation and operation of an effective SMS.
