CRM Instructor course for Caribbean Airlines

ITS have delivered a CRM Instructor course for Caribbean Airlines in Trinidad.

As with all private CRM Instructor courses delivered to their clients, ITS tailored the course to the needs of the Caribbean Airlines instructors.

As the course progressed, the ITS instructor responded to the specific needs of the delegates and the course was adjusted to suit their requirements.

This flexibility, in adapting courses to the specific requirements of individual clients, ensures that course delegates derive maximum benefit from attending an ITS CRMI raining course.

HPL Instructor course for Qatar Airways.

ITS have delivered a Human Performance & Limitations Instructor course for Qatar Airways on their base in Doha.

Qatar Airways continues to employ a significant number of direct entry pilots and has found that the HP&L knowledge of many of these pilots does not meet the EASA requirement. Previously this issue was dealt with by requiring all direct entry pilots to attend an HP&L course at a local university; however, the course was considered to be too theoretical and not fit for purpose.

Qatar Airways therefore asked ITS to deliver an HP&L Instructor course to a number of their instructors and to provide a set of courseware suitable for a 5-day HP&L course.

Why Some Airline Pilots Don’t Want Cameras in the Cockpit

Authorities debating whether the benefits outweigh the risks

The debate over video cameras in airplane cockpits is heating up, as a string of high-profile aviation disasters prompt concerns over whether accident investigators have sufficient information.

The United Nations’ aviation arm is expected to make a big push later this year to install video cameras in airliner cockpits, the Wall Street Journal reports. The discussions over the additional technology will likely take years; the regulation will ultimately fall into the hands of individual countries.

Pilot unions and other groups have long opposed cockpit video cameras, arguing that images or footage may be misused by accident investigators, prosecutors or news media. Additionally, some argue that the information provided by the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder – neither of which collect visual information – is sufficient. Others worry that the cameras may be doubled for routine monitoring of pilots, or that the costs of installing such technology are too high.

But cockpit camera opponents are facing an uphill battle. Christopher Hart, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, argued last week before a Senate panel that in the crashes of SilkAir Flight 185 and EgyptAir Flight 990 in 1997 and 1999, respectively, information from cockpit cameras would have been able to confirm the suspected pilot suicides. Instead, both investigations turned up inconclusive despite strong evidence of a deliberate crash.

Pilots Reporting Increase In Drone Encounters

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – The Federal Aviation Administration bans the commercial use of drones but the high-flying devices are so popular with hobbyists, they are becoming a threat to airplanes.

Reports obtained by CBS4 Investigator Rick Sallinger found nearly 200 FAA reports of drone interference with planes and helicopters. The reports come from across the country.

There are also highly publicized incursions, such as the drone landing on the White House lawn and one flying over an appearance by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. And YouTube is filled with videos of drones crashing into everything from power lines to smokestacks and skyscrapers.

The rules on drones are just for commercially operated drones. Those drone operators must pass a knowledge test, be vetted by the TSA and keep the drones in visual sight at all times.

The FAA does have recreational guidelines but they simply suggest drone users avoid being careless or reckless.

Network Rail, England

Network Rail High Speed contracted ITS to design and deliver Rail Resource Management (RRM) training to their signallers, shift managers and other operational teams.

Safety and efficiency are prime concerns for Network Rail High Speed and the key objectives of this initiative were therefore error reduction and error management, along with increased efficiency.

In considering the implementation of a RRM process, Network Rail High Speed required the following elements:

  1. GAP Analysis
  2. Design bespoke initial RRM course
  3. Deliver initial RRM training

The ongoing requirement includes

  1. Design and deliver recurrent RRM training
  2. Implementation of an ‘on-the-line’ non-technical skills assessment and evaluation process

ITS completed the project in April 2013 and received the following feedback:

“It was quite a gamble using a “non-railway” training provider, but boy did it pay off. The response from the staff has been extremely positive, and listening to individuals challenging their behaviour these last few days has been music to my ears and is a testament to your good work”

Human Performance & Limitations – CRM Instructors

Sun Express recently asked ITS to deliver an HPL course to their CRM instructor team on their base in Antalya, Turkey.

HPL forms an integral part of a CRM Instructor’s skills, and of course an acceptable knowledge of HPL is an EASA requirement.

The course covers the background to HPL within CRM and TEM, and looks more closely at the range of topics within the HPL syllabus.

This course will be a requirement for CRM instructors who are flight attendants, and will act as a refresher course for CRM instructors who covered HPL during their initial flight training.

The course will also be beneficial to any personnel who would like to gain some knowledge about Human Performance & Limitations.
